It’s hard to believe that May is almost over, as we continue to wait for better weather to arrive. The rainfall has been good for areas affected by dry weather in recent years, as Terry says we’re cutting grass in places that we normally don’t this time of year.
That said, compared to last year, the average daily temperature has been 6-7 degrees less in the month of May, which has made it hard to get new grass started. Areas damaged by winter exposure have been over-seeded and are improving slowly. And on that note, there’s green grass starting to show on the new putting green!
Overall, the course is in good shape considering the winter we had, and the weather to date. Watch for the new tee-boxes on holes 15 and 18 to be opening soon, once we get a week or two of heat.
Canadian Men’s Amateur plans are coming together. The committee is still hoping to get more volunteers signed up over the next week. Putting this event takes a lot of volunteers and coordination, and the deadline to order uniforms is coming up in a few weeks. Anyone who wants to be involved should visit the volunteer registration portal <HERE>. Past Champions of the Canadian Men’s Amateur have won 11 times on the PGA Tour, including last year’s Canadian Open Champion Nick Taylor, who won the Canadian Men’s Am in 2007 at Riverside CC.
SGCC will receive 3 exemptions into the tournament, and the qualifying process has been set. There will be 1 spot awarded to the highest SGCC finisher in the Reliance Gregg’s Central Am (June 29-July 1) and 2 spots determined in the Club Championship (July 20 & 21). Full qualifying details are available <HERE> including eligibility and registration information.
Driving Range Bag Stands have been a nice addition this year, thanks to the Thursday Night Lights golf group.
The BUG Tournament is looking for a few more teams on Wednesday next week. SGCC’s own Dr. Joe Blondeau hosts this annual charity event with proceeds toward the purchase of equipment for the Saskatoon Health Region in clinical microbiology. Click <HERE> for the tournament poster and contact info.
